Is there any way to reduce the unpleasant side-effects of poultry waste (such as bad smell) through changes in the feed? And more importantly, how can I claim that my feeds are better than my competitors’ in this respect?

There are two approaches and i would recommend the use of phytase enzymes as practised in our university farm. If you are not accessible to this then manipulation of stocking rate, ventilation, selection of ingredients in compounding and disposal will be the other option. You may write to me for details

We have a product called Atovi that among other benefits removes the foul odor from the manures of all animals. Kindly visit our website www.atovianimalg2.com. Atovi is a vitamins and minerals feed premix. The product is now available in Colombia and the Unites States.

Principally odour is generated from the breakdown of undigested protein - in the gut/litter. Strategies to maximise protein absorption and minimise excess nitrogen in the diet will help. Type of carbohydrate/fibre present in the diet may also be important as is maintaining a healthy gut flora. Contact me through www.premiernutrition.co.uk if you'd like to discuss further.

Poultry waste smell (litter smell) is mainly a management issue. If your flock is healthy and have a good management practices and good ventilation system, you will smell the natural litter smell only.

So if you are talking regarding the natural smell of the poultry letter, it could be minimized by different mean. The main concept in any procedure is to reduce the breakdown of the ammonium compound and capture the released ammonia and other odor.

There are too many products to give you this effect. I would suggest you to use stabilized hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 0.25 up to 2% concentration in water. This to be sprayed in the house. In addition to the odors control it will also control the hygiene of the poultry house. H2O2 work as highly effective sanitizer and odor control.

Another option but it may be more expensive, to use Ammonium Chloride. It works as buffering agent and prevent any degradation of the ammonium compound.

Regarding the unusual smell, you should solve the main problem which cause the bad smell.

Most smellss are attributable to the efficiency of phosphorus excretion, i think manipulation of feed through inclusion of phytase enzymes could be important

Bad odor from feces are brought about by bacterial decomposing of undigested feeds. So make sure that every ingredients in the feeds are well digested and no excess nutrients for bacteria. Used enzymes such as phytase, mannanase and protease then adjust the nutrient specs by lowering specific nutrients in order to minimize excess nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogens. Use also sufactant or lecithin to improve oil and molasses digestability. We also use products to control bacterial growth such as organic acids. Also use of zeolite to absorb some of the ammonia.
