It does sound strange, but one of the recurring subjects of discussion at the just past International Poultry and Feed Expo in Atlanta was aquaculture. There is a great deal of interest in this sector: the next "hot" agribusiness area.

Although aquaculture is certainly not new, there is a great deal of interest in it, mainly because of its growth potential.

I heard comments about it talking to participants at a conference the day before the show, and at the show itself, the subject kept coming up.

In Central America and Southeast Asia, in particular, aquaculture is growing very rapidly. The sector is quickly becoming an important factor in the whole animal protein equation.

One industry supplier mentioned that aquaculture is expected to have an average 5% growth over the next decade, as compared to the 2% growth expected for the poultry industry over the next decade.

This same supplier mentioned that there are challenges for the aquaculture industry: limited knowledge of fish nutrition, environmental/pond management issues and use of applicable technology.

By the way, this year's IPE/IFE show had a better attendance than last year, and most participants and exhibitors I talked with were very pleased with the expo.

Great summary Chris...I heard much the same last week and look forward to providing educational content about aquaculture (and ruminants too!).

Our first foray into this will be at the WATT Online Feed Forum that will be held on 24 June 2010. Peter Best is in the process of putting together a wonderful program - as of today - here are the presentations:

1) Mycotoxin control -- with lead speaker Dr Jules Taylor-Pickard and support from the International Feed Industry Federation
2) Poultry nutrition --- with lead speaker Dr Tony Marangos on feeding of laying hens
3) Feed formulation & manufacturing workshop --- with lead speakers Dr. Mian N. Riaz, Ph.D, Texas A&M University and Dr. Leland McKinney of Kansas State University
4) Ruminant nutrition --- with lead speaker Prof. Phil Garnsworthy on feeding of dairy cows
5) Aquafeeds and fish nutrition -- with lead speaker Dr Albert Tacon

Yeah, in Indonesia also, aquaculture is growing very rapidly. Now, the minister of fishery is focusing on boosting up the production. Shrimp, Nila, and catfish are the main comodities.

Chris,

Thanks for the blog.

About two years ago, a professor in the U.S. told me that aquaculture is gaining more weight as a provider of food for the growing population of the world.

It is also good to see that there was an "optimistic" atmosphere at Atlanta's show.
